Help inspire and teach the builders of tomorrow

Position: Mobile Software Engineer
Location: New York, NY
Job Category: Full-time

Hopscotch is building a visual programming language on the iPad that needs to be as beautiful as it is functional. We’re a small team of seven working to empower kids to become digital makers and thinkers. Our mission is to empower anyone anywhere to create their own technologies. We released Hopscotch in April 2013, and have since won awards, been featured by Apple and used by kids in over 100 countries.

Here at Hopscotch, we want everyone to have the chance to experience the joyful and creative parts of computer programming without getting bogged down by tricky syntax. We believe that while not everyone will become professional software engineers, some exposure to and understanding of how computer programs work is beneficial to everyone.

We’re looking for a Software Engineer who is excited about working in a fast-paced startup environment and delivering a high-quality product while writing clean, well-factored code. You should care about programming language design, teaching kids and using software to make the world a better place.

You offer:

  • experience with object-oriented programming.
  • a great attitude, smarts and willingness to work hard and learn on the job.
  • experience with mobile development, preferably iOS.
  • rigorous processes, excellent development skills and, most importantly, share our passion for helping people learn and make things they never thought they could.
  • Bonus: experience with automated testing on iOS, Ruby on Rails, Postgres, Heroku, AWS, load testing, experience with scaling web services, Android.

What you'll be doing:

  • working in Objective C and Swift with UIKit to deliver a great user experience on our mobile app.
  • helping create and define powerful programming language in a scalable and beginner-friendly way.
  • depending on your skills and interests- helping scale our backend ruby on rails app.
  • working in an agile environment, using pivotal tracker and sometimes pair programming.
  • fully test-driving our backend app and testing as appropriate on the iOS client.

If this sounds like something you’d like to hear more about, please get in touch! We’re a idealistic, fun and slightly weird crew, we’re always shipping product, and we’d love to hear from you.

This position is open now. Your salary will be commensurate with your experience.
